RECAP: CUMGIRL8 PERSEVERES THROUGH COPS AND DODGER FANS

 

Two locations and a whole lot of luck dragged LA punks to the end of the earth to see Cumgirl8 and friends

As one of the few members of the crossover niche of Angelenos that traverse both the punk and rave scenes, when I heard about CumGirl8 playing a secret outdoor location, my worst fear was that it would be held at Snake Pit.  

Snake Pit became a mecca for ravers shortly after the start of COVID.  (Warehouse raves were a thing of the past due to COVID restrictions.) These raves were simple, one generator and at least three nos tanks. However what this shows promoters may have not realized was that Snake Pit was on the police's radar for the past 6 months or so. The spot was long burnt.

I had my doubts after discovering where the show was being held, but after paying $15 plus service fees for my ticket, I obviously had to check it out. The night started out incredibly strong. Trashworld took the makeshift stage and wowed everyone with their hit single, "Freak in da Club." Despite the generator plug being pulled before they could conclude their dating app anthem, the crowd's energy was tangible - we all wanted more.

After the cops busted up the show, we all headed to 4100 Bar to play some pool and cut our losses. Within a few minutes of arriving at 4100, ticket holders got email notifications to head to Little Joy. The show was back on!

With the Dodgers season in full swing, Little Joy was already packed with sports fans before our arrival. Little Joy was recently completely remodeled and the dark dismal bar that was known for its subpar shows seemed to leave its love of music in the past as they completely scrapped the venue portion of the bar in the remodel. In no uncertain terms, I was wrong. Little Joy single handedly saved the show that night.

With the pool table pushed out of the way, the bands set up.  First up was IzzySpears followed by Cumgirl8.

Donned in bikinis and nun attire, CG8 completely blew me away, and the crowd agreed. At the intersection of punk and fashion, Cumgirl8 was on my list of bands to see for years. Newly gentrified Little Joy was most likely upset by the unruly crowd breaking glasses and standing on their lavish oak tables. I,on the other hand, completely ate it up. The post-punk group delivered bass lines I felt in my soul, and the goth undertones of their songs had everyone dancing their hearts out.

*Upon further research among the community, the spot originally known as Snake Pit is located further down the trail.  However, over time many have referred to the trail and any spot along it used for outdoor events/parties as "Snake Pit" though typically never venturing deep enough along the trail to actually see the Pit.
