PREMIERE: SPOON BENDERS Share New Single 'DICHOTOMATIC' Ahead Of Sophomore Album

Portland, Oregon based psych rockers Spoon Benders have just shared ‘Dichotomatic’, the lead single off their upcoming record How Things Repeat - we’re addicted.

Trailing the release of their debut album Dura Mater (May 2020), Spoon Benders have mastered their unique blend of psychedelic dipped-punk, cementing their spot on our record players and in our hearts. Almost metal in it’s presentation ‘Dichotomatic’ is a formidable track among the bands discography, blending notes of blues and punk rock to create a lead single sure to stand out live and not. The music video, directed by Karlee Boon, is a colorful drag through the monotony of lives and 9-5’s - a fitting lead into the bands next chapter which hopefully includes a lot more stages and a lot less grinding.

We email-chatted with Spoon Benders about the creative process behind the concept of ‘Dichotomatic’ and its gorgeous Karlee Boon-directed music video and their upcoming album How Things Repeat

What was the inspiration behind your new single 'Dichotomatic' and its beautifully shot, Karlee Boon-directed music video?

The inspiration for the single started as a collaboration between Katy and Velvet writing bass riffs at home. They often collaborate with bass lines as a songwriting tool and had the goal of writing a slower, dancier song to juxtapose the songs we had written for our upcoming album. The inspiration for the music video was to portray the grueling monotony in our daily work lives outside of the band. People often forget that musicians work grueling 9-5 jobs to survive while balancing their band and personal lives.

How will this upcoming album differ from the first LP 'Dura Mater'? Are you building upon that sound or going in a new direction entirely?

Two-part answer to a two-part question! The band's sound has evolved in How Things Repeat. For our first record - Dura Mater - it was our very first time making an album together, the band had only been together writing for 6 months, and for some of us, it was our first time recording an album period. Since April of 2019, the band has been writing, rehearsing, and performing live together multiple times a week. I think How Things Repeat has captured that growth and is an excellent representation of our evolution together as a band and individually as players and songwriters. For How Things Repeat we are building on our sound and looking to express similar energy through the recording as we do on stage in the live setting. I anticipate the band's sound to explore other directions genre-wise in future albums, however for now it still feels right to express ourselves in this sonic style.

What’s next for Spoon Benders? When can we expect that new record!

We are excited to say that we will be releasing our sophomore album "How Things Repeat" in October 2022! Along with an exciting tour with some amazing bands that we love dearly. We are so excited to share this album with the world, and take it on the road. Many more details to follow!
